Most fish sold in petstores are WILD CAUGHT, and not bred in fish farms. So taking a fish out of the lake is the same from buying a fish from the petstore.

Only concer is from taking from an outside water source is:

    1) Being Illegal in some states
    2) Introducing disease and parasites in your aquarium
    3) Putting the fish through shock, one environment to another without adaptation

This is why alot of fish species are being bred on fish farms, seeing sometimes Wild Caught fish have a harder time adjusting to an aquarium.

    Not really.
    Its called being cruel.
You should never take animals from the wild unless they are injured

probably not. ive seen some people try to do that and although you think that putting them into cleaner water would help, for some reason it ends up killing them instead

NO! i hate to break it to you but its not a good idea. I have seen this happen many times before and they will just die. You also shouldn’t take them from the wild its mean and maybe even illegal? Wild fish just don’t do well as pets. Go buy some from a pet store. THey aren’t that expensive and are domestic and accustom to living in tanks, You are probabley freaking those poor fish out. I don’t mean to sound rude im just trying to inform you…please put the fish back. you will have better luck with domectic ones

If by mosquito fish you mean gambusia they are very hardy and will survive and probably breed like rabbits too since they are live bearers.
I caught some for my tank but decided that I didn’t like them all that much so now they live in a tub of water in the garden.
Here (Australia) and in lots of other places they are an introduced feral pest fish, so it is no harm to the environment if you want to take some home.

If they are gambusia, wild guppies or endlers or similar then they are fine to keep in an aquarium.

I’m not sure about the ‘glass’ fish, do some research and see what conditions they require, what size they grow to etc.

There is really no difference between catching a local fish, and buying one that was fished out of the Amazon. Just check local fishing regualtions, and dont collect anything endangered. But generally if you find a local pool teeming with small fish, it will do no harm to anything to catch a couple.

I currently have a small freshwater crayfish in one of my tanks that came from the stream that flows through my back garden. It’s something you cant buy at any pet store, but I have done my research and they are fine to keep in a normal coldwater tank. Also legal to catch (bag limit of 50) and not endangered.
