Fish Tank Aquariums

Hey y’all I’m looking at starting up a salt water fish tank. I kept Bala sharks and catfish for a while but they out grew the tank so they were given a new home. I have a tank as well as a basic filter and heater. What do I need to start a marine tank.

If you can give me a list with the estimated cost that would be great. I just haven’t had the time to make it to our local fish specilist (it’s finals season where I am).

I’m trying not to spend more than 0. on supplies.

You have the tank, heater, filter… so I won’t include those.

    Protein skimmer – $100-$150
Live Rock – 1-2 lbs per gallon @ ~$8 per pound
    Live Sand – 1 pound per gallon @ ~$30 per 20 lbs
Salt mix – depends on the size and quality but 50 gallon is about $20.. going to be a regular purchase
Power Heads – $20 each at least.
Hydrometer – $5-8 depending. Unless you go with a refractometer then it’s about $40+
    Marine Test Kit – $35

As you can see, there is no way you can set up a proper saltwater aquarium with a $250 budget

You’re going to need over 1000 dollars for a sw aquarium.

You’ll need skimmers, a good filter, a test kit, the fish, a big tank, etc.

Assuming you have at least a nice four foot long 120 gallon aquarium and stand with a sump underneath…
I would not start out in saltwater with something smaller, since the smaller the tank, the trickier it is to operate.
    8 by 54 watt TEK light – $492
Super Reef Octopus LX1000 skimmer – $289 (you need one for each 100 gallons or fraction of the tank size)
GEO UMC618 Media Reactor – $225 (one for each type of media used)
    Ecosystem 60 – $385
Pan World Magnetic Water Pump 200PS – $249
plumbing to hook all this together – $100
    3 Koralia 3’s – $105
    Wave generator – $600
50 pounds of primo live rock – $505
50 pounds of base rock $150
    reef janitor package – $120
I have a feeling I’m leaving something out that would be about – $250

If anyone asks, "How much did all this cost?", you say, "Five dollars."
