Yes they are the best, especially if you have the lid and light. to start out put a layer of aquarium charcoal in the bottom to absorb extra moisture and purify the liquids. then add layer of good quality potting soil but not with to much fertilizer as you do not want the plants to grow to fast. You can use dried moss to fill in places or can go and collect live moss to use.

Your plants is unlimited, there is lots of sites online about terrarium gardening.

I am in the process of researching the how to’s of turning a 55 gallon aquarium into a carnivorous world. I want a turtle and lizards included. I am going to put in a small waterfall in one corner that runs into a small pond.

It is best to start out with a small one and gradually work up to large systems.

Absolutely! It would make a terrific terrarium. Make sure you put in a good bed of sphagnum moss to hold the moisture. Add any moisture loving plants you’d like. you could go run of -the- mill, like begonias, or do a cactus type garden. You are limited only by your imagination!
    Have fun
